SEWING CLASSES

I teach sewing instruction of all levels and types. Lessons range from beginning to intermediate, and include hand sewing and machine sewing. My focus is primarily on clothing construction, but I can also teach soft goods sewing (curtains, pillows, etc.) and alterations. Classes are generally 1.5 to 2 hours and are taught at my studio and shop in Grass Valley, or at Arts Alive Sewing Academy in Auburn. Students can bring their own sewing machines, or use the machines I have on site. All supplies and materials are provided for the initial class.

Beginning Machine Sewing Class - Part 1

​​

This class is designed to introduce beginners to the basics of machine sewing and serve as a refresher class for those who have not worked with a sewing machine in a while. All materials and equipment for this class are provided. In this first class, we will learn the following:

- The sewing machine – parts and function

- Essential tools of the trade (fabric, thread, a seam ripper, pins, scissors, bobbins and an iron)

- How to thread the machine and wind a bobbin

- How to pin and cut fabric using a simple pattern

- How to sew straight seams using machine guides, and press seams with an iron

Project: We will create a basic envelope pillow cover using techniques we learned in class. All materials provided.

Beginning Machine Sewing Class - Part 2

​​​

This class builds on techniques we learned in the Machine Sewing Part 1 class, focusing on basic dressmaking techniques. You can bring your own sewing machine, if you have one, or use one provided at class. In this second class, we will learn the following:

- Understanding and demystifying clothing sewing patterns including their language and symbols

- How to take accurate measurements for sizing

- Pinning, cutting and marking a clothing pattern

- Sewing and finishing a clothing piece

Project: We will make a simple, wrap skirt or pajama pants. Students will receive a materials list to bring prior to the class.

Open Workshop - Sewing Studio

​

This is an open workshop for those who want time to work on ongoing projects, and need assistance and/or guidance. Students can bring projects they'd like to work on, and will have the use of my studio and equipment.

Class: 5 maximum participants

​

Cost: $25 per hour per person​

INDIVIDUAL SEWING LESSONS

Individual Sewing Lessons for Charter School Students, Home School Students and Individuals

 

I offer one-on-one sewing lessons for local charter and home school students, as well as other individuals wanting to learn to sew. I am a registered vendor for many charter schools, so voucher funds can be used for lessons. Please contact me to inquire about lessons for your child or yourself:

Lessons Offered:

 

Beginning Sewing:

 

This lesson plan is for those completely new to sewing, or those who haven’t done any sewing in a long time and need a refresher. Sewing is not at all difficult if you take one step at a time as a beginner.  â€‹â€‹

​Individual lessons are generally one hour, with instruction/demonstration of new skills, student practice, and working on ongoing projects. Examples of projects include: Creating an envelope pillow cover, a simple pair of pajama pants, a drawstring backpack, and other beginning projects utilizing both machine and hand sewing techniques. Lessons can be scheduled one at a time, but a series of 4 is recommended.

Individual lessons are $60/hour and all equipment is provided, fabric and materials for initial 4 lessons is provided as well.

Intermediate Sewing:

 

This lesson plan is for those who already know how to use a sewing machine and have successfully completed several sewing projects on their own. We’ll dive deeper into more advanced techniques and working with patterns for sewing clothing.

​

Individual lessons are generally one hour, with instruction/demonstration of new skills, student practice, and working on ongoing projects. Examples of projects include: Making a skirt from a pattern, making a simple jacket from a pattern, making a corset or vest from a pattern, costume construction, and projects that students choose on their own.

​

Individual lessons are $60/hour and all fabric, equipment, supplies and needed materials are provided

I am a professional clothing and costume designer with my own clothing design business that offers unique, handmade clothing and costume pieces with a historical feel.  In my more than 30 years of experience I have developed a unique set of sewing and design skills that I love to share with others. I can teach anything from beginning machine or hand sewing up to advanced clothing construction, costume design, alterations, interior design products, or anything else you can dream up!​​
